These quartz / rock crystal nodules are formed in gas bubbles in volcanic rock where the cavity left by the gas is being filled up by quartz, chalcedony and agate.
These only have a very thin outer layer of chalcedony or agate and are filled with quartz.
Over time they are eroded out from the host rock and can then be found on the beaches in Scotland.
