Ammonite Ammonites were shell-bearing squids that lived in the sea about 360 million years ago. After the ammonite died, it sank into the mud of the seafloor and, over time, became this wonderful fossil. The windings of the case, crystallized with light calcite, form a particularly beautiful contrast to the darker rock.
