Amethyst Amethyst is the violet variety of quartz and has been a popular gemstone for thousands of years. Its colour can range from light violet to a dark purple and it can often be found mixed with white quartz, one of the most common examples being the so called chevron amethyst which often display white, v-shaped bands of white quartz. Amethyst can be found pretty much all over the world but the most well known locations are in Brazil where some of the biggest amethyst geodes are found, sometimes meters high and weighing a few tons.
