What is spectrolite?
Spectrolite is a fascinating variety of labradorite and was first discovered in 1940 in Ylämaa in southeastern Finland. Its name is derived from its play of colors, in which the light is broken down into spectral colors.
The basic color of spectrolite is dark, usually gray to black, but when light hits the stone, it shimmers in colors ranging from red, orange, yellow, green, blue, or violet. This rainbow-like iridescence is also known as labradorization.
These spectrolites, with their unique play of colors, are found only in Finland, which is also considered the type locality. Therefore, only labradorites from Finland may be sold under this special name.
