Spectrolite: A Fascinating Gemstone from Finland
Spectrolite is an impressive variety of labradorite, first discovered in 1940 in Ylämaa, in southeastern Finland. Its name is derived from its remarkable play of colors, where light is split into spectral colors.
The base color of spectrolite is dark, usually gray to black. However, when light hits the stone, it reveals a spectacular display of colors, including red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet. This rainbow-like iridescence is also referred to as labradorescence.
Spectrolite, with its unique color play, is found exclusively in Finland, which is considered the type locality for this extraordinary stone. Consequently, only labradorite from Finland may be sold under the special name "Spectrolite."
