Finnish Spectrolite
Spectrolite is a special variety of labradorite, it was first found in Ylämaa, southeastern Finland, in 1940. Its name is derived from its play of colors, where light breaks into spectral hues.
The base color of spectrolite is dark, usually gray to black. When light hits the stone, it shimmers in spectral colors of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, or violet. This rainbow-like iridescence is known as labradorescence.
The known occurrences of spectrolite are limited to Finland, which is considered the type locality. Only labradorites from Finland can be sold as spectrolite due to their unique color play.
