Moonstone Moonstone is a particularly popular gemstone; it is a variety of the mineral feldspar. The moonstone owes its name to its unique shimmer, which is reminiscent of moonlight. The shimmer is caused by the special structure of the stone and the resulting refraction and scattering of light. The Romans and Greeks already used moonstone for jewelry and some believed that the stone was formed from petrified moon rays.
