Handmade earrings made from Scottish Skye marble from the Isle of Skye.
Scottish Skye marble
Skye marble comes from the Scottish island of Skye in the Inner Hebrides, where it is mined in a small quarry in the shadow of the Cullin Hills.
Only about 1 kg of every 1000 kg of mined material can be processed into jewelry and the workable pieces are collected by hand on the Isle of Skye.
The marble was formed about 500 million years ago and shows a wide variety of colors, with blue, yellow and pink being particularly rare and sought after.
Most pieces of Skye marble consist of a mixture of green or black serpentinite mixed with white or grey limestone.
The limestone was formed millions of years ago from the remains of shells and corals.
Skye marble is said to have a special charisma and calming effect, in keeping with the island's reputation.
There are numerous myths surrounding the Isle of Skye and the island is also known as the Island of Mist, as the island and its rugged mountains and cliffs are often surrounded by thick fog, creating a very special, mystical atmosphere.
