Obsidian (volcanic glass) Obsidian is a volcanic glass rock that forms when lava with a specific composition cools rapidly. The color of obsidian is usually black, but if you hold the stone up to the light you will see a brownish color and also the internal details such as inclusions and fractures become visible. Due to its particularly sharp fracture edges, obsidian was used to make tools in the Stone Age. Today, obsidian is popular as a gemstone and for making art objects.
